The Russell Seibert Papers contain correspondence, lecture notes, and research files. The correspondence documents Seibert's professional activities chiefly as chairman of the American Horticultural Council and International Horticultural Congress. Research files document Seibert's work on plant genetics in Latin America (chiefly Peru, Ecuador, Panama, and Uruguary). Included are notes on flower and fruit seasons, seed collections, and on DDT and other insecticides.

Russell J. Seibert was a horticulturist, botanist, and director of Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. He received his Ph.D. in botany from George Washington University in St. Louis. Water lilies were his original area of research interest, and Dr. Seibert had a long association with Shaw Gardens in St. Louis. In the 1940s he joined the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and began research in plant genetics in Haiti, Peru, and Costa Rica. In 1950 he became head of t...
